ADULT FRENCH LANGUAGE COURSES FOR FALL 2018~

It’s time to register for Fall 2018 courses!  We would love to welcome both new and returning students to our school.

As stated in the course schedule,(see post “Schedule for Adult Group French Courses”) we will need a minimum of 4 students for a course to be able to continue.  As such, if you are interested in a course, it’s important that we know as early as possible.

For placement, please refer to the level descriptions below.  If you are unsure of which course to join, you can send me a short description of your experience with French, and I can help you find the right level.

  • Beginner 1:  Intended for absolute or near absolute beginners. Students can speak only a handful of words or no words in French. (Approximate proficiency levels: ACTFL Novice Low; CEFR Lower than A1)
  • Beginner 1.5: Intended for students with a very basic knowledge who can hold limited conversations about their lives and surroundings, but still have major gaps in vocabulary or grammar in the present tense that impede communication.  Students mostly communicate using memorized chunks of language, but may occasionally use creative sentence variety. (Approximate proficiency levels: ACTFL Novice Mid/High; CEFR A1)
  • Beginner 2: Intended for students who can hold conversations about their lives and surroundings but still make frequent errors when doing so.  They have some gaps in vocabulary and grammar, but have been exposed to subjects like the passé composé that they can use successfully with help. They can get their basic meaning across in many situations even if they struggle, and they are creative with sentence structure beyond memorized phrases. (Approximate proficiency levels: ACTFL Novice High/Intermediate Low; CEFR A2)
  • Intermediate Mid: Intended for students who can hold conversations on a variety of topics and are very often accurate when using the present tense with some gaps in understanding.  Can use past or future tenses but will still need moderate vocabulary and grammar support.  Students may have some exposure to more advanced grammar and vocabulary, but may not be able to use them successfully. (Approximate proficiency levels: CEFR A2/B1)
  • Intermediate High & Advanced Conversation: Intended for students are able to converse on a wide variety of topics including discussion of abstract topics.  Students have likely been exposed to past tenses, the subjunctive, conditional, & futur simple, but may still need support with these tenses or vocabulary, whereas use of the indicative mood is accurate most of the time outside of occasional errors or inconsistencies. (Approximate proficiency levels: CEFR B1/B2+)
